Today was the first really spring like day that we have had this year and I'm loving it! There are only a few more weeks to Easter and I am craving pastel colors and new flowers for my flower beds.

This little angel sleeved bishop dress is a great style for warm and hot weather.The bishop style is perfect for babies, toddlers, and little girls. They all look better in a dress without a waistline.

Carousel Smocked Christmas bishop dress

Girl's Holiday Dress

This post features a smocked dress by Rare Editions in a size 5. The gorgeous smocking is accented with three wreaths and three holly bouquets. The dress is made of a black and white gingham with a silver metallic thread. Fibers are 74% polyester 23% silk and 3% metallic yarn.

The dress has a four button closure and a sash that ties in the back.

Length approx. 28 1/2"....Underarm to underarm 12 1/2"
The only downside of this dress that I know of is that it is Dry Clean Only. I always prefer machine washable for practical reasons.

The suggested retail for the dress is $90, but the starting price on eBay is $19.95. It is bound to go up some, but often you can get new smocked clothing for half of the price that they sell in the children's boutiques.

There are been several of this design available in various sizes on eBay this week. The offering vary everyday. If you browse by size, you are bound to find what you are looking for or a great substitute.

Where there are children, there is a flurry of activity to prepare for going back to school. We are all stocking up on school supplies while the price is right. But more than school supplies must be purchased.  Most children have need of new clothes for the coming school year.

Here is a precious green and white gingham shortall  from Kelly's Kids.

It is made  of 35% cotton and 65% poly.  The green alligator applique on the front is sure to delight any little boy. The jumper buttons at shoulders with large white buttons. It has  snaps at the grotch for easy dressing.  It has a lining of  solid white cotton polyester.

Pigs might not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about smocked clothing for children, but you have to admit, these smocked pigs are adorable. This smocked jumper from the Vive La Fete Collection is made of easy-to-care-for polyester/cotton fabric. It is so easy to put on and take off since it buttons at the shoulders. It has a 3 inch hem which can be let out as your child grows. It comes with a white short sleeve blouse with a peter pan collar trimmed with dainty pink ric rac. It has button closures in the back. I painted pigs and cows and horses on the baby’s crib and stitched an appliqué pig wall hanging to match the cow, chicken, and lamb wall hangings. We also had also had a wind up plush pig that played music. This little outfit reminds me of those days.

I found another great smocked boutique shoppe called The Snowbunny Boutique.  This smocked bishop Christmas dress is an example of the beautiful smocked dresses that are available in many sizes.  This Bow Peep dress has a round yolk with  puffed sleeves and is made of bright red poly/cotton fabric, an easy to care for fabric. It is decorated with the cutest snowmen and Christmas tree embroidered on the smocking.

I have discovered a new designer whose brand name is Blu Moon Design. The designer's name is Kristi and she is a (mostly) stay at home mom to three little girls. She says that they are her inspiration for all her designs! It may surprise some people, but quality smocked clothing can be economical.  When you buy clothing for special occasions, you generally expect to pay more.  So if you compare smocked clothing and non-smocked clothing, you will find that the smocked clothes will fit a child much longer and then can be passed down to other children rendering the dollars spent to yield more benefits.

1.  The smocked portions of the garment "give"  and stretch with movement allowing the child to play freely and comfortably.  Smocked garments fit children in a soft, non-binding way.

4.  Since smocking never goes out of style the smocked clothing can be passed down to your other children or given to cousins or friends.  The classic look of smocking is always special.

5.  The natural fabrics that are generally used in smocked children's clothing are cool and comfortable. Cotton or cotton/polyester are the popular choices.  (Kid's have no patience with uncomfortable clothing.)

It is important to choose a garment style that is appropriate to the age or body style of the child. Dresses that have a waistline are not flattering to a baby or a toddler. Bishop dresses are a great standby for both infants and toddlers. Waistline styles do not flatter heavy children. A bishop style or a high yoke is much more attractive. Conversely, if a child is thin, be careful not to make her dresses too long so that they accent her thinness. An older child of nine or ten usually looks better in a more tailored dress style than a bishop type dress. Fortunately, pleats with smocking are flattering to everyone.

Keep color families simple by choosing one predominant color with no more than two secondary colors. The shades in a garment should match in brightness. If the dress is basically pastel, all of the colors should be pastels. If the fabric color is more of a medium shade, then the coordinating fabrics and the embroidered smocking should be in medium shades also. If you go with bright party color fabric, all the coordinating colors in the dress should also be bright. Be especially careful with the bright colors. You may regret the choice later as you tire of it.

Make your child the focus. The dress style and colors are chosen to accent her features. Pastels are often chosen for this very reason. They take nothing away from the child, but contribute to the overall beauty of the child wearing the outfit; therefore, color choices should be considered carefully. Too much color or mixiness in color choices can take the focus off of the child.

Smocked garments are perfectly beautiful choices for boy infants. Smocking is also fine for little boys. As your little man grows, you will probably want to choose more manly looks for his heirloom clothing. It is a personal decision as to when a boy is too old for this special childhood look. Be sure that your child’s father is in agreement with your decision to dress your son in smocked and heirloom garments. Enjoy the time that he is little and can wear such lovely things.

Lastly, it is important to consider the fabric. You can not have a quality garment without quality fabric. Garments made of excellent fabric lend themselves to lasting and looking fresh even when they are passed down to younger children
